AboutWho's Who
Who's Who

Behind every issue you'll find a variety of contributors, but the three driving the ship include Pat Hoglund, Dave Schamp and Ken Cook.

Pat Hoglund
After an 11-year stint as editor of another outdoor publication Hoglund's goal of launching a magazine that resonated with salmon and steelhead fishermen in the West came to fruition in 2004. It was his love of anadromous fish that led him to publish Salmon & Steelhead Journal where he serves as editor and publisher.
Dave Schamp
It's a dirty job, but someone has to serve as the magazine's voice of reason. Thus Schamp's title of Managing Editor. Along with that Schamp serves as the magazine's lead photographer. Schamp has been an avid angler since childhood and pursuing salmon and steelhead has been his passion for the last 40 years. He was among the first to become an Oregon Master Angler instructor and he currently serves as the Oregon Director for the Coastal Conservation Association.
Ken Cook
As the magazine's art director Cook is responsible for maintaining the look and feel of the magazine. He brings with him a strong background in graphic design from small, unknown companies like Nike and Adidas. He originally hails from Nebraska where as a child he was force fed a steady diet of bass from stock ponds. Since working as the magazine's art director he has broadened his piscatorial pursuits and found out what all this salmon and steelhead hullabaloo is all about. Suffice to say he's a convert.

Editor's At Large

Inside each issue, you'll also find three of the most respected authors in the salmon and steelhead industry: Eric Martin, Terry Rudnick, Bob Ball and Don Thomas.

Eric Martin
A proverbial “gear head” and “fish bum”, Martin is the magazine’s Gear Editor. One of the most knowledgeable and well-respected young writers in the Pacific Northwest, Martin holds a fisheries degree from Oregon State University and is able to bring his knowledge and passion to the pages of the magazine each issue with the gear reviews. He analyzes and breaks down each subject matter, at the same time educates the reader at a level not seen in any other publication.
Terry Rudnick
With over 25 years writing experience and a lifetime of fishing experience Rudnick writes the Saltwater Column. Every issue you'll find an informative “how-to” story that is applicable to the many ocean and Puget Sound fisheries that await you.
Bob Ball
Spending over 250 days on the water provides plenty of opportunity to experiment and master proven techniques and that's where Ball shines. Every issue Ball brings his knowledge and expertise to the pages of Salmon & Steelhead Journal. Ball guides on Washington's Olympic Peninsula as well as several months in Alaska.
E. Donnall Thomas, Jr.
For years Don worked as a physician, a commercial fisherman, bush pilot, and fishing and hunting guide. He's written 16 books now writes full-time where you'll see his byline in other publications like Traditional Bowhunter, Gray's Sporting Journal, and Big Sky Journal. And we're happy to report he's added Salmon & Steelhead Journal to the mix.
